An album that showcased the full potential and mastery of Gabriel's Genesis lineup. The record embodied all the band's best qualities. The instrumentalists are at their best here, especially Banks and Hackett, who deliver one stunning performance after another. The guitar solo on "Firth of Fifth" is particularly impressive, even being cited as exemplary in one guitar-learning book, and deservedly so. The songs are structurally diverse as never before: from simple hits to instrumentals and epic compositions, and in this diversity, they excel. The song order is also intriguing: throughout the album, a long song alternates with a relatively short one. I must say, this is a very clever idea, as a little rest is absolutely necessary after such monumental performances. It's fair to say that "Selling England by the Pound" was the last album with the classic Genesis sound, as it was followed by the musically completely different "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway," and then Gabriel left the band altogether. The result: the album became not only the band's creative pinnacle, but one of the pinnacles of all non-classical music in general. Oh! They knew how to make music back then! Where has all that skill gone now?

Not my favorite I just buy because of a recommendation from my friend. I really don't have much comment for other listeners. I recommend you to listen to the album from somewhere else before deciding to buy or not.
