Description:Swiss-born Michel Corboz was a conductor whose joy in singing inspired his exploration of choral works and opera. A fine baritone with a background in church music, he said that he even wanted "an orchestra that sings". In 1964, opening up a new world of possibilities, producer Michel Garcin signed Corboz and the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne - the group he had founded three years earlier - to the Erato label. Over the ensuing years, Corboz (who died in 2021) built an extensive discography, expanding the audience for composers like Monteverdi - sparsely represented at the time - Carissimi, Lalande and Marc-Antoine Charpentier, while reinforcing the presence of such figures as Bach, Handel and Purcell. Intent above all on doing justice to the composer, he readily collaborated with both period specialists and the modern instruments of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and Lisbon?s Gulbenkian Orchestra. A substantial number of the recordings in this 74-disc set are receiving their first CD release and have been specially remastered in high definition. Encompassing the Renaissance and the Baroque, this is the first and larger of two boxes to be devoted to Corboz?s Erato discography; its counterpart will range from the Classical era to the 20th century. Liner notes in English, French, German. Wallets illustrated with original artworks. -

"Michel Corboz - The Complete Erato Recordings" on CD brings together the full legacy of conductor Michel Corboz's work for the prestigious Erato label, documenting a cornerstone chapter in 20th-century choral and sacred music interpretation. Across this comprehensive collection you will find his hallmark readings of major works of the baroque and classical repertoire, with a strong focus on oratorios, masses and large-scale choral pieces. Corboz is known for his clear structural vision, finely balanced choral sound and an expressive, yet never sentimental approach that places the text and its spiritual message at the center. The set offers a wide panorama of his collaboration with top-class soloists, chorus and orchestra, and allows listeners to follow the artistic development of one of Europe's leading choral conductors over several decades.
The artist credit "Corboz, Michel/OCLS/OGSL/OOL" points to his close work with specialized vocal and instrumental ensembles, emphasizing stylistic refinement, transparent textures and historically informed phrasing without dogmatism. This edition is ideal for collectors, for listeners who wish to explore key works of sacred and choral literature in thoughtful reference performances, and for those interested in the evolution of modern baroque performance practice.
Michel Corboz (1934-2021) was a Swiss conductor and one of the most influential figures in choral music of the second half of the 20th century. He became widely associated with deeply felt interpretations of baroque and classical sacred works, and helped bring renewed attention to composers and pieces that had long been neglected in the concert hall. Under his direction, ensembles gained a reputation for clarity of diction, blend and expressive intensity, making many of his recordings enduring reference points for discerning listeners.
