 | | Description: | With the release of the second CD on the legendary Challenge Records label, Bear Family RecordsĀ® continues its
acclaimed Thatā??ll Flatā?¦ Git It! series, once again diving deep into the explosive world of late 1950s and early 1960s
Rockabilly and Rockā??nā??Roll. Following the highly praised first volume (BCD17780), this collection draws exclusively from
the catalogs of Los Angelesā??based Challenge Records and its Jackpot subsidiaryā??two of the most exciting
independent labels of the era, founded by Gene Autry and Joe Johnson.
The second CD delivers the same relentless energy and musical quality that made its predecessor a favorite among
collectors and fans. Listeners familiar with our first compilation BCD17780 will instantly recognize several artists
returning with equally powerful performances. Wynn Stewart is featured again, this time with She Just Tears Me Up and
a particularly fast-paced version of Come-On. Texas-born rockers Huelyn Duvall and Jerry Fuller make welcome
reappearances, while Challengeā??s flagship combo The Champs are represented alongside their key artists Dave
Burgess and Chuck Rio. Kip Tyler & The Flips bring their trademark drive, and piano-pounder Al Downing once more
contributes a standout with the blistering Oh! Babe, backed by The Poe Kats.
The compilation also shines with storming sides by Kimball Coburn, Jerry Arnold, The Four Teens, and R&B
powerhouse Prentice Moreland. A major attraction of this volume is the inclusion of artists not featured on Volume 1.
Jimmy Gordon, Al Lucas, Hedley & Lee, Jack Southern (possibly Baker Knight recording under an alias), The Rangers,
and Gene Davis all make their presence felt, expanding the musical scope of the set. Guitar-driven workouts by Bob
Regan and Alan Pierce & The Tonekings further enhance the high-octane feel throughout.
ā??Thatā??ll Flat Git It! Vol. 53 - Rockabilly & Rock 'n' Roll From The Vaults Of Challenge & Jackpot Recordsā?? is a no-holds-
barred Rockā??nā??Roll experience, capturing the raw excitement and diversity of the Challenge and Jackpot archives. A
perfect companion to Volume 1, this release confirms Bear Family RecordsĀ® as the definitive curator of classic
Rockabilly and early Rockā??nā??Roll. - "That'll Flat Git It! Vol.53 - Challenge and Jackpo" on CD brings together a high-energy selection of vintage rockabilly and early rock 'n' roll recordings originally issued on the legendary US labels Challenge and Jackpot. This volume in the long-running "That'll Flat Git It!" series focuses on the raw, guitar-driven sound of late-1950s and early-1960s West Coast rockabilly and rock 'n' roll, with pounding rhythms, echo-laden vocals and twangy guitars. Instead of centering on a single artist, the compilation presents a stylistically coherent cross-section of label highlights and rarities, from dance-floor-ready rockers and wild boppers to mid-tempo shuffles and country-tinged numbers that capture the transitional era between classic rockabilly and early pop-rock. The carefully remastered tracks offer crisp, powerful sound while preserving the analogue warmth of the original tapes, making the CD attractive both for collectors and for new listeners discovering this music for the first time. Thoughtful sequencing and detailed annotation (typical for the series) turn the disc into a miniature label portrait, ideal for anyone interested in exploring the Challenge and Jackpot catalogues beyond their few better-known hits.
